Carol Gove

Artist Information

Carol Gove is a contemporary collage artist whose work draws from nature, landscape, and abstract expressionism, balancing expressive painterly gesture with the tactile presence of layered collage. Using fragments of handwritten letters, sheet music, sewing patterns, photographs, and other found materials, Gove transforms personal and familial history into richly textured compositions that feel both intimate and universal.

Her process is one of accumulation and revision, building and selectively removing layers so that images appear, fade, and re-emerge over time. Color plays a central role in her work, with each hue contributing emotional depth and movement across the surface. The result is a visual dialogue between memory and material, where recognizable fragments invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences while engaging with the physical history embedded in each piece.

Gove received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Hampshire in 1993 and continued her studies at the DeCordova Museum School in Boston. Based in New Hampshire, she has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including Gebert Contemporary (Scottsdale), Stremmel Gallery (Reno), Steidel Contemporary (Palm Beach), Carver Hill Gallery (Camden, ME), The Drawing Room (East Hampton), and East End Gallery (Nantucket). Her work has been featured in museum exhibitions at the DeCordova Museum, the Danforth Art Museum, and the Whistler Museum of Art.

Her work was also included in In Context: Collage & Abstraction, a landmark 100-year retrospective at Pavel Zoubok Gallery in New York, shown alongside master works by artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Robert Motherwell, and Lee Krasner. Gove’s work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston, Kodiak Venture Capital, Dana Associates, and Wells Fargo Bank.

In addition to her studio practice, Gove is a longtime advocate for animal welfare, dedicating over 25 years to animal rescue efforts. She has served as Vice President of the Board at Felines & Friends New Mexico and has generously donated her artwork to a wide range of nonprofit organizations supporting humanitarian, medical, housing, and animal welfare causes.
