Henry Moore
Artist Information
Henry Spencer Moore (30 July 1898 – 31 August 1986) was an influential English artist, best known for his semi-abstract monumental bronze sculptures, which can be found around the world as public works of art. Moore also created numerous drawings, including a poignant series depicting Londoners sheltering from the Blitz during World War II, as well as other graphic works on paper.
Moore’s art often abstracts the human figure, typically focusing on mother-and-child or reclining figures. His works are generally suggestive of the female form, though he did explore family groups during the 1950s. Characteristically, his sculptures feature pierced or hollow spaces, with many interpreting the undulating shapes of his reclining figures as reflections of the landscape and hills of his Yorkshire birthplace.
Moore gained fame for his carved marble and large-scale abstract bronze sculptures, playing a key role in introducing modernism to the United Kingdom. His success with large-scale commissions made him exceptionally wealthy. However, he lived modestly, dedicating much of his earnings to the Henry Moore Foundation, which continues to support education and the promotion of the arts.
