Lucien Lefevre
Artist Information
Lucien Lefèvre (1850–1893) was a French poster artist renowned for his contributions to the golden age of poster design. Born in Varennes-en-Argonne, France, Lefèvre studied portrait painting under Georges L. Bruders and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1872 and 1873. He later became a pupil of the esteemed Jules Chéret at his printing atelier, where he developed a distinctive style influenced by his mentor.
Lefèvre gained recognition for his vibrant and dynamic posters, which captured the spirit of late 19th-century Parisian life. His work spanned themes of advertising, gastronomy, and entertainment, reflecting the modern artistic movements of the time. He was among the select artists featured in Les Maîtres de l’Affiche (The Masters of the Poster), one of the most prestigious and influential art publications in history. This collection of 256 color plates showcases the finest posters from the turn of the century, a period when the medium flourished as both commercial art and cultural expression.
