Hidden Gems: Meet Sallie Hirshberg of SH Modern Art
August 11, 2026
Today we’d like to introduce you to Sallie Hirshberg.
Hi Sallie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career in the art world began with a lifelong passion for art and formal study in art history and business at Boston University. After graduating, I spent a decade working with a Fidelity Investments subsidiary, helping build private and public art collections across the United States. That experience gave me a deep foundation in the art market and showed me how meaningful the right artwork can be in a home, business, or public space.
In 2000, I opened Galerie d’Orsay on Newbury Street in Boston. We began with limited capital and a consignment-based inventory, but I remained committed to presenting exceptional artwork. Over time, the gallery became known for masterworks on paper, from Rembrandt etchings and Picasso linocuts to works by Dalí, Chagall, Miró, and Matisse, alongside contemporary and emerging artists.
I built lasting relationships with collectors, dealers, museums, artists, and cultural leaders around the world. These relationships allowed me to create distinctive exhibitions, source rare works, and help clients build collections with both personal meaning and lasting value.

In 2014, I founded SH Modern to offer a more personal, advisory-focused approach to art collecting. In 2016, I moved to Fort Myers with my family and artwork, inspired by Southwest Florida’s beauty and its growing appreciation for art. In August 2025, I opened a dedicated retail space for SH Modern in Fort Myers, creating a welcoming place where collectors and the community can experience exceptional art in person.
Today, SH Modern helps private collectors, businesses, and organizations acquire, authenticate, evaluate, and place art ranging from historic masterworks to contemporary pieces.
My approach has always been grounded in education, transparency, and trust. I want clients to understand what they are acquiring and, above all, to choose art that speaks to them. To me, acquiring art is much like falling in love—it should enrich your life every time you see it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I started my first gallery with limited capital and relied heavily on consignment artwork in the beginning. We opened Galerie d’Orsay in Boston in September 2000, and less than a year later, we faced the tragedy of September 11th. It was a deeply uncertain time for everyone, particularly for a young business, and it reinforced the importance of resilience, relationships, and staying committed to the work.
Building credibility in the art world required patience, persistence, and an unwavering commitment to quality. I had to earn the trust of collectors, artists, dealers, and institutions these are relationships that take years to develop.
The art market can also be complex and unpredictable. Every acquisition requires careful research, authentication, condition review, pricing analysis, and coordination among buyers, sellers, and galleries. Helping clients feel confident in those decisions has always been essential, especially when they are making meaningful investments.
Moving from Boston to Southwest Florida and building SH Modern in a new market brought another set of challenges. I had to establish new relationships, introduce my approach to art advisory, and create awareness of the caliber and variety of work I could provide. In the decade we have been in Southwest Florida, we have also navigated the disruption and recovery that came with three hurricanes. Opening our Fort Myers retail space in August 2025 was an exciting milestone, but it also required navigating all the practical realities of launching and operating a new storefront.
Through every challenge, I have stayed focused on integrity, education, and personal service. The obstacles have strengthened my relationships with clients and reinforced why I do this work: to make art collecting approachable, meaningful, and joyful.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
SH Modern is a fine-art advisory and gallery based in Fort Myers, serving private collectors, businesses, and designers. We help clients discover, acquire, authenticate, evaluate, and place artwork that brings meaning and beauty to their homes and spaces.
I specialize in modern masters, works on paper, and exceptional contemporary art, while also sourcing rare historic works. Our offerings range from artists such as Rembrandt, Picasso, Dalí, Chagall, Miró, Matisse, Warhol, and Calder to a broad spectrum of contemporary living artists whom we represent. We also offer entry-level pieces starting at $700, so whether someone is purchasing their first work of art or expanding an established collection, I can guide them through every stage of the process.
What sets SH Modern apart is the depth of my experience, the global relationships I have built over more than three decades, and the highly personal way we work with each client. We are not limited to what happens to be hanging on the gallery walls. Through relationships with dealers, artists, museums, and experts worldwide, I can help locate extraordinary works and provide the research, authentication, condition review, and market perspective clients need to make an informed decision.
I am especially proud that SH Modern makes collecting feel approachable. Art can seem intimidating, but it should also be joyful. I take the time to understand each client’s taste, space, goals, and story, often through in-home or on-site consultations. Then I help find work that feels right not simply art that fills a wall, but art that becomes part of someone’s life.
Our Fort Myers retail space, opened in August 2025, gives collectors and the community an opportunity to experience art in person and see the breadth of what SH Modern can offer. Above all, I want readers to know that we lead with trust, education, and integrity. My goal is to help every client acquire art they will love for a lifetime.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is helping people build a meaningful connection with art. Art has the power to bring joy, inspire conversation, preserve memories, and transform the way we experience a space. I believe it should be accessible and personal and not intimidating or reserved only for experienced collectors.
I also care deeply about trust. Clients often come to me with a vision, a special space, or an important milestone they want to honor. It is a privilege to guide them, whether they are selecting their first piece or building a collection they will pass on to the next generation. I want them to feel informed, comfortable, and excited throughout the process.
At the heart of SH Modern, what matters most is creating lasting relationships with our clients, artists, and the broader community. When the right work of art finds the right home, it becomes much more than an acquisition; it becomes part of someone’s life and story.
